DAY 1 LIMA – Peru Group Tours

On arrival in Lima, you receive assistance at the airport and are transferred to your selected hotel. Rest of the day is free at leisure to get to know the city.

DAY 2 City Tour: Cathedral, CASA Aliaga and Larco Museum

Explore Lima old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with fascinating historic buildings. Start with a scenic tour in the colonial downtown, which radiates from the Main Square, where you can appreciate the grandiose architecture of the Spanish Empire. Stroll over to the Cathedral, which was begun in the 16th century and took 80 years to build. Then visit the Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion granted in 1535 by chief conquistador Francisco Pizarro to Jerónimo de Aliaga, one of his captains. This is the only house from that time that still belongs to the same family after all these centuries. Continue to the Larco Museum, located in the traditional Pueblo Libre district, which is housed in a beautifully restored viceregal mansion built on a seventh-century a pre-Columbian pyramid. The museum boasts the most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver artifacts, as well as pieces of erotic art. Finally, head to the ‘Love Park’ in the upscale coastal district of Miraflores, where you can admire the cliffs and a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. The tour may end at the Larcomar Shopping Mall, at the Peru pa’ti food market or at the hotel.

DAY 3 Lima / Cusco – CITY TOUR AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Pick-up after breakfast and transfer from your hotel to Lima Airport to catch a flight to Cusco. A meet and greet service on arrival is followed by transfer to your selected hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of this charming city, which was the capital of the Inca Empire. The tour starts with a visit to Santo Domingo Convent, a large Renaissance-baroque complex, which was built over the Inca Qoricancha temple. It was one of the most important temples dedicated to the worship of the sun and its foundations are still prominent at the base of the convent. Ancient chronicles say the temple was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden representations of nature. Continue to the Plaza de Armas to visit the cathedral. It features an elaborate Renaissance façade and, like other important monuments in the city, was built over a demolished Inca temple. Head to the hills above Cusco to visit the remains of the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, whose imposing ramparts offer a stunning panoramic view of Cusco, the ruins of temple and amphitheater of Qenqo, where it is believed the Incas practiced agricultural rituals. Finally, visit Puka Pukara (‘Red fortress’ in Quechua) an Inca military complex located on a prominent hill. Its dwellings squares, bathrooms, aqueducts, walls and towers can still be appreciated. Return to and drop off at your hotel.

DAY 4 CUSCO – AWANAKANCHA –  PISAC – Ollantaytambo – SACRED VALLEY

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for the Urubamba River valley, which is popularly known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The first stop is at Awana Kancha (‘weaving palace’ in Quechua) a farm-cum-zoo where endemic Andean camelids are bred. Learn about llamas, alpacas and vicuñas, which are friendly and domesticated, and which have wool with very strong fibers, which are used to weave ponchos, chullos, and other garments. Continue to Pisac, a historic town on the valley floor, to wander through its market. Break for lunch is a local diner before continuing to late Inca period Ollantaytambo fortress, which controlled access to the Sacred Valley. The site is a huge archaeological complex which, although it is known as a ‘fortress’, was actually a tambo, a leisure city used to accommodate delegations that traveled long distances. Drop off at your selected hotel.

DAY 5 SACRED VALLEY – MACHU PICCHU

After breakfast at the hotel, head to Poroy Station to board the train to Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to Machu Picchu. Following a scenic three-and-a-half-hour journey through dramatic Andean landscapes, arrive at the station in Aguas Calientes. Here you board a coach for a 25-minute ride to Machu Picchu itself. The ‘Lost City of the Incas’ had lain abandoned in the heavens for four centuries until American explorer Hiram Bingham happened upon it in 1911. Machu Picchu is believed to have been built in the 1450s by Inca emperor Pachacutec as a holiday retreat yet within a century the city would be abandoned following the Spanish conquest. The Spaniards never found it so it was spared the destruction they wrought on other Inca sites. Instead, it was slowly swallowed up by the jungle and hidden from harm. A guided tour explains the origins behind this awe-inspiring citadel and the most prominent landmarks among the 200 or so buildings such as the monumental Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial and the Burial Grounds. Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch at the famous Café Inkaterra, a beautiful thatched-roof restaurant hemmed in between the railway and a mountain.Rest of the day free at leisure.

DAY 6 MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

Breakfast at the hotel is followed by a free morning. We strongly recommend that you wake early today and make your way to see the sunrise over Machu Picchu. This is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience. The best views are from Huayna Picchu, which is about 360 meters above Machu Picchu and boasts an underground temple complex, and Inti Punku, which offers even better views from some 390 meters above the citadel. Another option is the Inca Bridge, a secret military trail, which controlled access to the citadel. In the afternoon, return by train to Cusco.

DAY 7 CUSCO – PUNO

Transfer to the bus station after breakfast at the hotel, boarding a bus to Puno, on the western shore of Lake Titicaca. There are three stops along the way to visit historic monuments. The first stop is at Andahuaylillas, a picturesque town famed for the beautiful 16th century Church of St Peter the Apostle. It boasts a gilded baroque interior and frescoes so delicate that it is known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of America’. Continue to Raqchi to admire the ruins of an Inca temple built to worship Wiracocha, one of the most important Inca gods. Break for lunch at Sicuani and also stop briefly at La Raya, which at more than 4,300 meters above sea level is the highest point on the route. The final cultural stop is at the archaeological site of Pukara, which dates from 200BC to 300AD, and where you can admire the collection of pre-Inca sculptures and objects at the Lithic Museum. Continue to Puno where you are met on arrival by a representative and transferred to your selected hotel in the city.

DAY 8 pUNO – Tour to the Uros Islands & Taquile on Lake Titicaca

Transfer to the shore of Lake Titicaca after breakfast to enjoy a motor boat cruise, alighting at a number of the islands in the lake. The first stop is at the unique Uros Islands. There are more than 40 of these floating islets, which are made entirely from totora reeds plucked from the lake. Meet the Aymara-speaking islanders, learn all about the making of the islands, their lifespan and upkeep while exploring these marvels of engineering made using only primitive materials and methods. Board the boat again to continue the voyage of discovery at timeless Taquile island, where the Quechua-speaking residents have maintained their ancient social system and earned a reputation for their fine hand-weaving technique. The island’s history is also as fascinating as its people, having been a penal colony during Spanish colonial times. Return to Puno for lunch with rest of the day free at leisure.
