Walk back through time amidst the magnificent ruins of ancient Ephesus visit the home where Mother Mary spent her final days be awed by the Temple of Artemis, the petrified waterfalls of Pamukkale, and the Temple of Apollo in Didyma.
Day 1 – Izmir/Tour of Ephesus/Kusadasi
Early this morning you’ll be met at Izmir Airport, and proceed to Ephesus, one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire, whose history dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. En route, we stop for a visit to the 14th century Mosque of Isa Bey. Upon arrival in Ephesus, you begin a walking tour focusing on the well-preserved remains of the city that start from the 3rd century BC. Highlights include the “Great Theater” where St. Paul preached, the Celsius Library, and the temples along the marble road. The state of preservation of these treasures will impress you.
After a buffet lunch at an open air Turkish restaurant, we visit a carpet cooperative to see how fine Turkish carpets are hand-woven by local crafts-persons. Then it’s on to the Shrine of Mother Mary, where it is believed that she spent the last years of her life. Then it’s on to the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World”. Before departing for Kusadasi, you’ll attend a fashion show at a high quality leather goods outlet. Day 2 – Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Kusadasi
After breakfast, we depart for Pamukkale, where you will see it amazing “petrified waterfalls”, a natural phenomenon created by white calcium. After a relaxing lunch break, we continue to Hierapolis, an ancient spa whose necropolis (cemetery) is the largest in Asia Minor. We’ll view the impressive ruins and theatre, then drive back to your hotel in Kusadasi, where you overnight. (L, D)
Day 3 – Priene, Miletus, Didyma
This morning you depart for Priene, the first city in the ancient world whose plan was based on a grid system. Sightseeing includes the Theater, Temple of Athena, Bouleterium, Agora, and the Altar of Zeus and Cybele. We continue to Miletus, an important Ionian city, where you visit the Delphinium, Nymphanion, the Theater, and the Faustina Baths. After lunch, it’s on to Didyma, where we view its imposing Temple of Apollo, known for its gigantic columns. Then you’ll be driven back to Izmir airport. (B, L)
