While the rest of the New Testament is comprised of narratives and instructional letters, the last book (The Book of Revelation) is an apocalyptic work consisting of visions and predictions of future dramatic events. It also uses a great deal of symbolic language. Interpreting The Book of Revelation is a task that has occupied biblical scholars for centuries. On this comprehensive tour you will visit the locations of all seven “Churches of Revelation” as well as the Byzantine and Ottoman treasures of Turkey’s historic capital, Istanbul.
Day 1 – Arrival in Istanbul
Arrive in Istanbul, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure.
Day 2 – Istanbul (Byzantine and Ottoman Heritage Tour)
After breakfast at your hotel, you begin a full day sightseeing tour of Istanbul. Highlights include: the illustrious Topkapi Palace (harem section is optional); the ancient Roman Hippodrome (site of chariot races); Hagia Sophia, the Byzantine church that was converted to a mosque in 15th century; and the famed “Blue Mosque”. Our last stop will be a visit to Grand Covered Bazaar, where you will have free time to discover some of the over 4,000 tiny shops that line its winding passageways. Overnight in Istanbul (B, L)
Day 3 – Half-Day Bosphorus Cruise
This morning you’ll be picked-up at your hotel and proceed to the embarkation point of your Bosphorus cruise. The cruise offers you wonderful views of Istanbul’s European and Asian sides, who shores are lined with marble palaces, centuries-old wooden villas constructed in the Ottoman style, luxurious apartment houses and other residences. You will also see Rumeli Fortress, a fortification built to control entry to the Bosphorus Strait and protect Istanbul. At the end of the cruise (approx. 1:00 pm), you will be driven back to your hotel, and have the rest of the day at leisure. (B)
Day 4 – Izmir, Ephesus and Laodicea
Morning flight to Izmir, where you will be met and driven to Ephesus, one of the most important of the “Seven Churches of Revelation”. A walking tour features the Celsus, Library, Odeon, Double Church (site of the Third Ecumenical Council held in 431) and the “Marble Road”. Then we visit St. John’s Basilica and the shrine of the Virgin Mary where St. John brought Mary in the fulfillment of his pledge to Jesus to protect her, and from where it is believed that she was taken into heaven. After lunch, we continue to Laodicea, another of the Seven Churches that was twice visited by St. Paul. Then we continue to Pamukkale for the night. (L, D)
Day 5 – Hierapolis, Pamukkale, Sardis, Philadelphia, Thyatira, Pergamum
This morning we depart for the ancient spa city of Hierapolis, home of Philip the Evangelist. Then we’ll enjoy a break among the glistening white calcium terraces of Pamukkale, before proceeding to Philadelphia. Here in the youngest of the “Seven Churches of Revelation”, we’ll visiting the remains of its early Christian church and still-standing city walls. Afterwards, we visit the ancient Lydian capital of Sardis and the ruins of its famous church another of the “Seven Churches”. We then proceed to Thyatira, and on to ancient Pergamum, where we spent the night. (B, L, D)
Day 6 – Pergamon, Izmir
After breakfast we motor tor Pergamum (Bergama), the place that St. John referred to as where “Satan’s throne is sited”. Our sightseeing tour includes a visit to the Church of Pergamum, the Red-Court, and the Acropolis. After lunch, we drive to Izmir (Smyrna), the city that was a recipient of a letter from St Paul praising its early believers for their faithfulness. After visiting to St. Polycarp Church and a brief city tour. Overnight Stay in Kusadasi. (B, L)
Day 7 – Kusadasi Istanbul
Free time and leisure in Kusadasi take afternoon flight to Istanbul on arrival transfer to hotel (B)
Day 8 – Istanbul
Free time until you are transferred to the airport for your homeward flight. (B)
