Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive in Cairo
Upon your arrival at Cairo International Airport, our representative will meet you and assist you through the entry formalities, and transfer you to your hotel. The remainder of day is at leisure. Overnight in Cairo. (D)
Day 2 – To Aswan and Abu Simbel Tour
This morning you board your flight to Aswan, then continue via connecting flight to Abu Simbel. Upon arrival, you’ll visit the awesome and gigantic twin temples of Ramses II and his queen Nefertiti with their facades of colossal statues. The sanctuary of the Temple is built at an angle to allow the sun to reach into the room and shine on the statue of the king on the days of his birth and coronation. Afterwards, you fly back to Aswan, where you’ll be driven to your hotel, The rest of the day is free. Overnight in Aswan. (B, L)
Day 3 – Nile Cruise (Aswan High Dam, Temple of Philae, Elephantine Island, Kom Ombo)
After breakfast, you’ll board a Nile River cruise ship. Your cruise begins with a tour of the monumental Aswan High Dam. Then it’s on to see the granite quarries that supplied the builders of the Pyramids with most of the hard stone used in the construction of those legendary monuments and temples. From here you continue by motorboat to the Temple of Philae on the island of Agilka. The temple was dedicated to Isis, sister/wife of the God Osiris and patroness of the Ptolemaic Dynasty.
Next, you sail around Elephantine Island on a felucca, the traditional Egyptian sailboat. Elephantine Island is the largest of the Aswan area islands, and is the site of some of the oldest ruins in Egypt, with artifacts dating to pre-dynastic periods. In the afternoon, you sail on the felucca to Kitchner Island (also known as “Lord Kitchener’s Botanical Garden”), Plant Island, Gizirat al-Nabatat, and Plantation Island. From the river, you’ll have a nice view of the Aga Khan Mausoleum, an elegant pink granite structure built in the late 1950’s. After lunch, you cruise to Kom Ombo for a visit to the Ptolemaic Temple of Sobek and Haroeries, the crocodile-headed god of fertility. Overnight aboard cruise ship. (B, L, D)
Day 4 – Nile Cruise (Kom Ombo, Esna, Luxor)
This morning, we set out by horse-drawn carriage to visit the Temple of Horus, the falcon-headed God of War, the most perfectly preserved of all the Nile temples. Returning to our cruise ship, we sail on to Esna, passing through the Esna Lock, and continue to Luxor. Overnight aboard cruise ship. (B, L, D)
Day 5 – Nile Cruise (Valley of the Kings, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon)
After breakfast, we cross to the West Bank of the Nile and visit the wondrous Valley of the Kings, a vast city of the dead. We’ll visit several of the magnificent tombs of 62 pharaohs that have been discovered. Then we proceed to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. This beautiful monument commemorating the reign of the only female pharaoh rises out of the desert plain in a series of terraces and merges with the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it. On the way back to our cruise ship, we see the famed Colossi of Memnon, two 66ft, 1,000-ton statues of Amenhotep III. Day 6 – Nile Cruise (Temple of Karnak, Temple of Luxor), Cairo
This morning you visit the Temples of Karnak, in the north of Luxor. The temple often referred to as “The Temple of Temples”, is the largest place of worship ever built. Its ancient name, Ipetisut, means “the most sacred of places.” After lunch, you visit the graceful Temple of Luxor was dedicated to the God Amun. Built by Amenhotep III and Ramses II for rituals and festivals, the temple is adorned with gigantic statues and obelisks. Your Nile cruise ends in Luxor, from where you will be transferred to the airport for the short flight to Cairo. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to you hotel. (An optional Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids is available this evening.) Overnight in Cairo. (B, L)
Day 7 – Pyramids and Sphinx, Egyptian Museum, Khan El-Khalili Bazaar
After breakfast, we proceed to the outskirts of Cairo to see the great pyramids of Giza, and visit three of the gigantic pyramids and the monumental Sphinx. From here, we will view the Giza Plateau, with its private royal tombs and the village of the workers who built the pyramids, dating back to 3,000 years B.C. You will also see the Valley Temple and if you choose, the amazing “Solar Boat”, discovered and dug out from the side of a pyramid, that was was used for the burial of the King about 5000 years ago. After lunch, we drive to downtown Cairo to for a guided tour of the acclaimed Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. In the evening, we’ll visit the renowned Khan El Khalili Bazar, an Oriental Bazaar that dates back to the 10th century. You’ll have time to stroll through its winding streets and have a drink or try a traditional Hooka (water pipe) at one of the bazaar’s cafs. Overnight in Cairo. (B, L)
Day 8 – Alexandria
Today we motor to Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city. The first stop is the Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa, a Roman burial site which has a family tomb that shows the merger of Egyptian and Roman art and architecture. Then we continue to “Pompey’s Pillar”, a 25 meter (82ft) granite column built to honor the Roman Emperor Diocletian who freed the besieged city and brought food to its starving people. The next site on our tour is the Roman Amphitheater, perhaps, the best preserved Roman site in Egypt. After lunch, we visit the famed Alexandria Library. Rebuilt in a striking contemporary style, the library houses over 4.2 million books published throughout through the centuries and the number is continually growing. Afterwards we drive back to Cairo, where you spend the last night of your “Best of Egypt” tour. (B, L)
Day 9 – Departure from Cairo
Free time until you are transferred to the airport to board your homeward bound flight. (B)
