Itinerary
The tour begins at Esentepe with a spectacular view of the Goreme Valley, its village, “fairy chimneys”, fantastic rock formations and cave houses. Then it’s on to the “Underground City” of excavated to a depth of approximately 85 meters, Derinkuyu is one of the deepest and best preserved underground cities in Cappadocia. It housed stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries, and other facilities, including a large room on the second floor that was a missionary school with study rooms.
We continue into the Ihlara Valley, formed by a 16 km-long gorge and lined with more than a hundred small rock-carved churches and houses. Here, you begin an approx. 4-km walk along the valley’s river, exploring the hidden churches as you go along. At the end of your walk, lunch will be served in the village of Belisirma situated alongside the river.
After lunch, you will visit the great Selime Monastery, carved out of rock by Christian monks in the 13th century. The size of the church will astonish you. The final, brief stop is at the Yaprakhisar panorama point, where you will have a memorable view of the Selime Monastery. (This is also one of the locations for the first “Star Wars” movie).
SPECIAL NOTES
Tour participants must be able to walk approximately 2.4 miles over rough, uneven surfaces. Comfortable shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended as shade is limited. The order of the itinerary may vary to avoid congestion at certain attractions.
This tour is also available on a private and group basis (information and prices on request). There are no restrictions on the arrival and departure times for private tours; however, participants on regular tours whose flights arrive after 8:30AM will miss the earliest scheduled attractions (no refunds are given for missed visits due to late flight arrivals).
