Itinerary
This tour covers the major attractions of the northern part of Cappadocia. It begins with a drive through the Martian-like landscape of the Dervent Valley to visit Pasabag’s “fairy chimneys”, where it is said that “the voice of the wind harmonizes with songs of the fairies.” We continue to Avanos, a charming old town with cobblestoned streets, where we visit the Terracotta Art Center, renowned for its handmade earthenware pottery and ceramic tile. The ceramic trade is the largest business activity in the area, and some of its numerous pottery factories, and the use of clay from the red silt of the Kizilirmak, date back to the Hittites.
After a relaxing lunch break, we visit the famous Goreme Open Air Museum to see the best examples of Byzantine art in Cappadocia. Goreme is situated in the heart of the Cappadocia Region, and its early Christian inhabitants realized that the area’s soft rocks could be easily carved out to form houses, churches, and monasteries. These Christian sanctuaries contain many fine examples of Byzantine art from the post-iconoclastic period particularly the frescoes that adorned the churches and monasteries. We complete the tour with a visit to the Uchisar Rock-Castle which has numerous hollowed-out vessels, rock tombs, and a large water cistern -all silent witnesses to history and human struggle for survival. From here, you’ll a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding valleys of Cappadocia.
SPECIAL NOTES
Tour participants must be able to walk approximately 1.5 miles over uneven and cobblestone surfaces. Comfortable shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended as shade is limited. The order of the itinerary may vary to avoid congestion at certain attractions.
This tour is also available on a private and group basis (information and prices on request). There are no restrictions on the arrival and departure times for private tours; however, participants on regular tours whose flights arrive after 8:30AM will miss the earliest scheduled attractions (no refunds are given for missed visits due to late flight arrivals).
